Decided to head to the gym more in 2023? You’ve probably got a bunch of goals. Gaining muscle, losing weight, toning up, or simply staying fit and healthy… But one aspect that’s easy to forget is the importance of hydration.
Failure to prioritise rehydration results in a dip in our energy levels. That sluggish and lethargic feeling happens when your body suffers from a lack of water, but also means you're off your A game when it comes to getting the most out of your workout.
In the Chilly’s Journal this week we’re sharing our 4 top tips to stay hydrated when you head to the gym.
Gym Water Bottles: Is big always best in the gym?
The Eatwell Guide says that to be healthy, we should drink between 6-8 cups of water a day, or around 1.5 litres, depending upon how active we are. Chilly’s Original Sports bottles deliver up to 500ml of active hydration and are perfect for topping up on the go.
We lose a lot of water through exercise, so remember to refill more than you would if you weren’t working out - but you don’t need a huge bottle to get the job done. It’s all about quality over quantity and when it comes to hydration good old H2O is both a healthy and cheap choice for quenching your thirst. It has no calories and contains no sugars, so it doesn’t damage teeth.
Sports drinks can be useful when you're doing high-level endurance sports and need an energy boost, but they're no different from any other sugary soft drinks - they're usually high in calories and chances are, along with resolving to workout more, you’re also tracking your calories pre-Christmas in a bid to shift a few excess pounds.
Top tips to stay hydrated at the gym
We’re sharing Chilly’s top tips to keep you healthy and hydrated all day long. It’s one of the reasons why we created our reusables, to help you stay firmly on track of your hydration goals.
1. Hydrate before, during, and after your workout
If you know you’re going to hit the gym after work, set a reminder to top up your Original Sports Bottle before you get to the gym.
Familiarise yourself with the location of water refill stations wherever you go so that you can always easily refill and rehydrate when needed.
Rehydrating beforehand can contribute to better circulation and heart health. Being adequately hydrated also supports energy levels, preventing fatigue and muscle cramping. You’ll workout harder, faster and for longer if you’re optimally hydrated.
2. Remind yourself to drink
Add reminders to drink water to all of your workout routines, whether it’s while you rest between reps or as you walk to your next station.
If you prefer to wing it whilst you work out, set reminders in your phone to go off every fifteen minutes minimum. This ensures you replace any fluid that is lost through sweat, meaning you don’t risk overheating and you can maintain good performance levels for longer.
3. Save money as you hydrate
On average a 500ml bottle will set you back about 80p (an optimistic figure these days). If you hit the gym three times a week, buying a bottle every time you exercise you could spend upwards of £125 on single use plastic bottles! Bad for your bank balance, even worse for the mounting plastic pollution problem.
Buying a reusable sports bottle will save you cash in the long run.
Every gym or sports facility should have a free water refill station, but if you prefer to work out on the road, by jogging or cycling outdoors, you’ll be pleased to know we’ve partnered up with Refill the award-winning campaign from City To Sea, to help people live with less plastic.
What is Refill?
Through their revolutionary app, Refill connects people to places they can eat, drink and shop without pointless packaging. To get involved, buy your Refill X Chilly’s bottle, coffee cup, or food pot now and download the app so you know where you can refill your bottle on the go. Now that’s what we call smart rehydration.
4. Reduce plastic pollution
One major issue with staying hydrated is the global plastic problem.
In 2021, approximately 2.51 billion litres of bottled water were consumed in the UK. How do we stay hydrated without contributing to global plastic pollution?
The answer is simple - invest in a Chilly’s reusable sports water bottle.
Chilly’s reusable sports bottles and caps have an important mission: to accelerate the adoption and everyday use of reusable products.
Cheaper for you in the long run and definitely better for the planet… Not to mention, if you have a reusable water bottle in your gym bag you’re far more likely to stay hydrated throughout the day!
Reset, rehydrate and reuse - when you make 2023 resolutions less rubbish.
